加拿大中小學在加拿各省的行政結構上各有不同，學校可分為以下及家長可自行選擇哪種學校:
- 公立學校 Free public schools
- 私立學校 Paid private schools
- 在家教育 At-home education
- 英語或法語學校 English or French schools
加拿大各地的教育局及私立學院提供幼兒園至中學 11 班或 12 班的教育給年齡為 4 至 17 或 18 歲的學生。 但各省/地區的學校結構和年級組別會有差異，學制一般分為以下:
- 幼兒 Pre-School 幼兒園
- 小學 Elementary School: 小學 1 年級至 6 年級或 7 年級
- 初中 Middle School: 由 7 年級 / 8 年級至 9 年級
- 高中 Secondary School: 由 10 年級至 11 年級或 12 年級
*魁北克省(Quebec)省的高中由 7 年級至 11 年級, 分數合資格學生可參加國際文憑 (International Baccalaureate Program, IB) 或 選擇預修課程 (Advanced Placement, AP)
學校董事會 School boards
加拿大學校董事會負責區內所有學校, 負責維護學校建築, 管理人員, 一般行政
學生入學等，學校董事也可稱為:
- School districts
- School divisions
- District education councils
學校董事會由被稱為“受託人”的公選官員管理。學校董事會定期舉行會議，以便公眾成員可以就他們所在地區的學校管理方式發表意見。
